Carlton on Trent station
Carlton on Trent
England

A southbound (Up) goods train passing the site of Carlton on Trent station (which had closed to passengers in 1955) with a Class V2 2-6-2 locomotive at its head. Carlton signal box is prominent in the foreground and to the right of this the Great Northern Innis partly visible. Carlton on Trent was on the ex-Great Northern Railway 'Towns' line linking Peterborough to Retford, which later came to form part of the East Coast Main Line. Website contributor John A Thickitt comments: 'The train was formed of vans (a railway term meaning covered wagons). Some or all of these vans may have had their vacuum pipes connected so that they could be braked by the driver; the position of the white oil lamps, attached to the front of the engine, in this case may indicate the minimum percentage of vans which have the vacuum brake in operation (however, note that some trains formed of vans would not have the vacuum pipes connected - in either case the 'headcode' - the positioning of the lamps - would have indicated this detail). On the railway a goods train with vacuum-braking was known as a 'fitted freight'.'
