Horse Bus, Arnold, c 1895

Front Street
Arnold
England

A horse bus outside the Horse and Jockey public house on Front Street. The bus belonged to a Samuel Williamson and operated on a route linking Arnold with Nottingham (although Arnold was served by the Great Northern Railway's station at Daybrook, this was some distance from the centre of the village and the rail route was indirect). A team of three horses are harnessed to the bus, presumably required because of the steep hills to be negotiated. W Perkins was landlord of the pub at this date and his name will no doubt be featured on the sign above the door. To either side the painted inscriptions advertise 'John Robinson's Noted Home Brewery Ales'.
