Miss Robinson's School, Arnold, c 1929

Front Street
Arnold
England

Miss Robinson's school, presumably a private establishment, was located at Chestnut House, opposite the Cross Keys public house. There had been a school on this site for a long time, although its history may not have been continuous. As Chestnut House Academy it is first recorded in 1844 and by the 1870s included a gymnasium, a lecture and recreation room, hot and cold water baths, a playground and extensive gardens. The 1871 Census shows that there were 38 pupils (all boys) aged between 11 and 15 years from all over Nottinghamshire, plus Lincolnshire, Hull and London. This much later view shows a group of pupils and teachers apparently attired for a theatrical event. By 1986 the site of Chestnut House was occupied by a Bejam store.
