William Gilstrap (1816-1896), second son of Joseph Gilstrap, succeeded his father's malting business on North Gate, Newark and (through exploiting the burgeoning rail network), turned it into a business of national import. In 1855 he bought the prestigious Winthorpe House in the village of Winthorpe, moving seven years later to a large hunting estate at Fornham Park near Bury St. Edmunds in Suffolk. In July 1883, the Gilstrap Free Library, his gift to the town of his birth, was opened in Newark, being the first public library in the town. Today, the building on Castle Gate, although no longer a library, continues as the town's Tourist Information Centre. This image is a copy of a large photrographic portrait of Sir William Gilstrap which is hung in the Gilstrap Free Library.
