House on south side of Main Street looking south west; the photographer was informed that the Doctor lived in the house. To the right is the field where the Dovecote is situated (see NTGM011604). I am uncertain whether this was the doctor's house at any period. He (Dr West) was known to live and practice at what in this series of pictures is named The Post House. Certainly before and after the 1950s this house, next to the Dovecote field, was occupied by the Clark family. They operated the coach business, Clark's Coaches, black and white livery, that was well established in the village and always used for rare outings from the village school. The company was also used for summer outings from churches and institutes in all the villages around - Lowdham, Oxton etc; there was no competition. Although hard to imagine from the photograph there was on the other side of the house a large yard flanked by two huge and not very attractive timber sheds that accommodated the coaches. All were ever single decker as far as I recall. At some period Clarks must have run a scheduled service that was later given up. One day in the 1950s they bestowed their stock of unused bus tickets on the school children. Some were single tickets stapled to a magazine, others were in reels. Either way they fascinated the recipients. There were then very few forms of 'media' to play with. The last member of the family I recall was Peter Clark who was alive in the 1990s. I have a notion that it was his father who started the coach business maybe two decades before the 1950s, possibly as a very pioneering venture at the time. Information supplied by Richard J Brumpton.
