This stone building, constructed in Gothic style, was previously a British School, opened in 1874 and moving to the pictured premises in 1876. The novelist D H Lawrence was a pupil teacher here from October 1902 to July 1905 and an uncertificated assistant teacher from August 1905 to September 1906. The main part of the school is on the left, while old maps indicate the right-hand section was used as a Sunday School, probably in association with Eastwood Congregational Church, part of which can be seen on the extreme right. The school closed in 1932 and despite its literary associations has been demolished - by the early 21st century the site was occupied by a frozen food store.
