Albert Ball was born 14 August 1896. At the outbreak of the First World War he joined the Sherwood Foresters. He became a fighter pilot, earning two Distinguished Service Orders and the Military Cross, becoming the first flying ace to become a British popular hero. He crashed to his death in a field in France on 7 May 1917 aged just 20. His death in action set off a national wave of mourning and increased posthumous recognition. At the time of his death he was, with fourty-four victories, the United Kingdom's leading flying ace, and remained its fourth-highest scorer.
