Newark Castle railway station
Newark on Trent
England
A close-up of the western elevation of the disused goods warehouse at Newark Castle station, looking east. The surviving external covered hoist or lucam (used for raising or lowering merchandise from or to rail level) and its associated covered loading/unloading shed are prominent; originally there were three such mechanisms but the other two had been removed. In 1846 the Midland Railway's Nottingham-Lincoln line was the first railway to reach Newark, although this building was erected later.
