Only four ancient churches in England are dedicated to this Saint who was Bishop of Autun in South East France and was martyred in 678 AD. The oldest part of the church is the chancel with its lancet windows of about 1200. The tower was built in 1859-61 in an elaborate 13th century style. The vestry was built about 1907. Almost every year since medieval days a single bell has pealed out at 11am on Shrove Tuesdays to remind housewives to prepare the pancakes.
