The Centre Tree and Cromwell House, Westgate, Mansfield, c 1920s

Westgate
Mansfield
England

This very fine mid-seventeenth century house still stands at number 68 Westgate. It was listed as Grade II in 1978 and the name comes from the ejected minister of Claworth, John Cromwell (d.1685). In the late 18th century and early 19th century it was a private school run by the Rev. Catlow, who later built Catlow Street, renamed St John's Street after the church was built in 1855-56. The centre (of Sherwood Forest) tree has been replaced by another oak. This picture formed a small hand-made Christmas and New Years greetings card sent by William G Maltby.
