The mansion was built in 1805 by Stanton, and for many years was occupied by the Greenhalgh family. Together with the adjoining public park of 13 and a half acres, it was bought by the old borough council after WW1 to provide a memorial to the men of the town who gave their lives during hostilities. The monument was unveiled and dedicated in September 1924. The house and land were previously in the ownership of the Duke of Portland who in view of tributes envisaged, agreed to sell them to the authority for even then the low figure of
