Sherwood Forest
Edwinstowe
England
Snow scene. The earliest extant Pipe Roll dates from 1130 and mentions Sherwood. This place-name implies a common wood belonging to the whole shire. It is not until the reign of Edward I (1272-1307) that specific documents dealing exclusively with Sherwood appear, although its existence as a royal hunting ground is likely to date back to soon after the Norman Conquest. Unlike certain other medieval royal forests, Sherwood was not used as such by Edward the Confessor (1042-1066). Yet there is evidence in Domesday Book that it existed at that time.
