England
Looking north (probably from an upper floor in the Town Hall) with the Bentinck Memorial among the market stalls and Leeming Street in the right background. Taken from a photographic copy of a commercial picture postcard. Mansfield Market originated with a charter granted by King Henry III in 1227 and was held at first on Mondays, but from 1329 this was altered to Thursdays. Prior to 1823 it was staged within the environs of St Peter's Church and at the bottom of Leeming Street, but it was subsequently relocated to the present Market Place.
