William Murray (1705-93) was the son of the 5th Viscount Stormont and later became the 1st Earl of Mansfield. A notable lawyer, he finally became Lord Chief Justice and virtually created the Commercial Law of Great Britain. It is claimed that of all his many thousands of judgements only two were reversed on appeal. This image is taken from an original engraving by J Jones 'Engraver Extraordinary to His RH the Prince of Wales & Principal Engraver to his RH the Duke of York', itself derived from a painting by W Grimaldi 'Miniature Painter to his R H the Duke of York'. The engraving was published by P Elmsley, Strand, London 'as the Act directs' on 1 June 1797.
