William Murray (1705-93) was the son of the 5th Viscount Stormont and later became the 1st Earl of Mansfield. A notable lawyer, he finally became Lord Chief Justice of the Court of the King's Bench and virtually created the Commercial Law of Great Britain. It is claimed that of all his many thousands of judgements only two were reversed on appeal. This image is taken from an original engraving by H Meyer, based on a drawing by J Jackson, itself derived from a painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds PRA, then 'in the Possession of the present Earl'. The engraving was published by T Cadell and W Davies (Strand, London) on 27 June 1812.
