Station Street
Mansfield
England
Looking north-east down the approach road within the former goods yard at the ex-Midland Railway Mansfield Town station with the viaduct carrying the line to Worksop in the background. This location was originally Portland Wharf, the northern terminus of the horse-worked Mansfield & Pinxton Railway and the original M&P stone-built goods warehouse of 1819 can be seen just to the left of the viaduct. The other buildings visible were of later Midland Railway origin; that on the right was Mansfield's passenger station until the line was extended to Worksop in 1875 and a new 'through' station was built off to the left. This is the station that is in use today, although it was closed to passengers from 1964 until 1995 when reopened as part of the Robin Hood Line project. The goods yard area was subsequently cleared to make way for a retail development, although the 1819 warehouse was carefully dismantled and removed to the Midland Railway Centre at Butterley in Derbyshire with a plan for re-erection there. However, this never took place and the building was effectively lost.
