The coronation celebrations of Edward VIII, who succeeded to the throne after his brother's (King George V) death in 1936. In 1930 Edward met Mrs Wallis Simpson, fell in love and planned to marry her. As Mrs Simpson had been divorced twice she was not considered suitable royal material, and pressure was put on Edward to choose between her and the throne. Edward reigned for 325, when on 10 December 1936, he executed an Instrument of Abdication which was given legal effect the following day, and gave Royal Assent to His Majesty's Declaration of Abdication Act. In 1937, Edward was created Duke of Windsor and married Wallis Simpson. The Duke of Windsor was then appointed Governor of the Bahamas, a position he held until 1945. He lived abroad until the end of his life, dying in 1972 in Paris (he is buried at Windsor).
