The Foundation stone was laid on June 2nd 1828. The Church was at first called the Moorgate Chapel of Ease for the parish of Clarborough. Founded almost immediately after the arrival of Rev Joshua William Brooks (who became Vicar of Clarborough in 1827) and was designed for the benefit of that portion of the Parish of Clarborough where the bulk of the population resided, i.e. Moorgate and Spital Hill. Before that most of those who went to church went to St Swithun's, East Retford, rather than to their parish church. A site of 2 acres was given by Henry Clark Huchinson, a landowner living at Welham. The Church was designed in a Tudor style, to hold 1000 people. In 1829 the building was completed at a cost of
