Clumber house was built by the third Duke of Newcastle in 1770. The house was constructed of white freestone quarried from his land five miles away. After the house was severely damaged by fire in 1879. The building remained the house of the Dukes of Newcastle but was eventually demolished in 1938 following another fire.
