Pevsner suggests in his book 'The Buildings of England - Nottinghamshire' 2d Ed. 1979. that this church is 'THE MOST IMPORTANT LATE SAXON (OR MORE PROBABLY SAXO-NORMAN) MONUMENT IN THE COUNTRY'. The Parish church in Carlton is believed to date back to 705 A.D. The lower part of its tower is Anglo- Saxon and the main doorway is Norman.
