This picture features Major General Sir Robert 'Lucky' Laycock of Wiseton near Retford (1907-68), Lord Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire. During World War 2 he was chief of combined operations after Mountbatten. He achieved fame as a commando brigade commander when he was landed by submarine in Libya and shot his way into Rommel's desert headquarters (Rommel was away). Sir Robert became a Major General at the age of 36, having previously been the youngest brigadier in the army. A Governor of Malta after the war (1954-59), Sir Robert Laycock died in 1968.
