Ordsall Crossing at Retford, looking west towards Whisker Hill Junction with an eastbound mineral train approaching. The locomotive appears to be 63611, an ex-Great Central Railway designed Class 04/1 2-8-0, then allocated to Staveley. The O4's were built just before and during the First World War and many served abroad during that conflict. The train is a Class 8 freight, indicated by the position of the oil-lamps on the front of the engine. Shortly after this photo was taken work commenced on elimination of the flat crossing that existed (to the rear of the photographer) between the Sheffield-Gainsborough route (seen here) and the East Coast Main Line. This involved construction of a new line at a lower level so that the Gainsborough line passed beneath the ECML. At Ordsall Crossing the new railway was in a deep cutting with the road carried over the railway on a bridge. This work was completed in 1965 and resulted in the closure of both the signal box here and Whisker Hill Sidings in the background (Many thanks to John Thickitt for supplying additional information).
