Retford Station looking north, showing V2 class locomotive no. 60963. The up-ended timber structure, between the tracks at the end of the platform, appears to be a 'Fog Signalman's Hut'. Before the advent of colourlight signals, the hut would be occupied during fog or falling snow by an individual whose job was to assist engine drivers' to identify the position of the signal. This was required because in such conditions visibility from the engine was severely restricted (each hut was also provided with a coke-burning brazier). The stop signal on the left controls trains on the 'Up Fast' (the southbound fast line).
