Retford Thrumpton Engine Shed, 1959

Thrumpton Lane
Retford
England

The former Great Central Railway shed yard at Retford, looking north-west and showing engines nos. 64416 (Class J11) and 63976 (Class O2) nearest. Locally, the ex-Great Central shed also had two alternative names: 'Thrumpton' and 'Low Yard'. The J11 is standing beneath the depot's sheer legs, which were used to raise a locomotive so that a pair of wheels could be removed for attention. Known as 'Pom-Poms', the J11s were so named on account of the explosive exhaust beats, which resembled the Pom-Pom guns of World War One.
