Firbeck Colliery Sidings
Costhorpe
England
See also NCCN001614 for a picture of workers and families about to go on their annual outing to the seaside. Goods available for sale on the stall seen here are buckets and spades, parasols, cricket bats and bottles of pop. Annual outings like this were arranged by the colliery from the colliery sidings to Blackpool. Often there were up to 3 trains leaving the colliery at hourly intervals commencing at 5.00am. They would take families to Worksop Station, but passenger trains could only go at 5 mph on this South Yorkshire Joint Railways leg of the journey, and it took as long to get to Worksop as it did to get from Worksop to Blackpool. Often on the return journey weary day trippers would jump the train at Worksop and catch the bus back home to Firbeck or Langold. Other trips were organised by the Langold Working Men's Clubs; usually to Cleethorpes or Skegness. These were primarily arranged for the children who were given sweets and fruit and books of tickets for rides in the amusement parks.
