The inn was adjoining the Priory Gatehouse for many years before the old inn was demolished in 1891, traffic was re-routed down by its side and the Abbey Cross was rebuilt in its present day position. Owned from as far back as 1822 by the Wale family, John Wale being the beer house keeper then and Eliza Wale following on in 1846, succeeded by Miss Mary Hannah Wale in 1873.
