Decorated for the Coronation of King George VI, 12 May 1937. George VI, born December 14, 1895, was the second son of George V and Mary of Teck. He never expected to ascend to the throne, but became king in 1936 when his brother Edward VIII abdicated. George was king throughout the difficult years of the Second World War. 1939. He followed in his father's footsteps by visiting troops, munitions factories, supply docks and bomb-damaged areas to support the war effort. He, his wife (the late Queen Mother) and two daughters Elizabeth (the present Queen) and the late Princess Margaret, stayed at Buckingham Palace for the duration of the war. George VI died from cancer on February 6, 1952.
