Ex-War Department 'Austerity' 2-8-0 number 90492 on Up mineral train. Website contributor John A Thickitt comments: 'Looking at this 'Austerity' class engine it is possible to identify the class of the train in the photograph by means of the headcode - temporarily attached white oil lamps on the front of the engine. In this case a lamp was positioned in front of the chimney, another over the right-side (as viewed) buffer. This pattern of lamps described a Class 7 train, defined as 'Express freight train not fitted with continuous brake' (there were several classes of freight train, each differing in braking ability which governed the maximum permitted speed; each class were identifiable by the pattern of the lamps). Here traffic on the Up line would be travelling towards Retford.'
