One of the more modern inns in the town it is first mentioned in the 1872 directory as a beerhouse on Bridge Street, tenanted by George Yates esq. who was the first licensee at the 1873 Brewster Sessions renewals. It certainly had no mention in the coaching terminals of Bridge Street, so we must assume that it was owned by John Ellis of Castle Terrace and Lady Lee Quarries, and later by his trustees and Eliza Ellis, his widow, it was a modest property. Wm. Stones eventually purchased the property and the adjoining Pask's chemist's shop and began renovation and reconstruction with J. Haslam esq. the Architect on 9 June 1933, which has continued up to the present day. Substantially built in Tudor style with large rooms upstairs it has been a noted venue for many sporting associations, particularly angling, for years. Rated at
