Railway Station
Retford
England
Class 04/8 no. 63785 shunting at the northern end of Retford station. The engine was another survivor of the imminent closure of Retford shed (ex-G.N., the ex-G.C. shed closed before the date of the photograph). This suggests that 63785 was a favourite; By this time only engines' in good mechanical condition survived a shed closure. Of First World War vintage (and subsequently modernized) the engine was one of a handful of the class to have avoided withdrawal until Eastern Region dieselization was completed. 63785 was condemned at Doncaster in early1966. The symbols and language on the side of the van (i.e. covered waggon) show that it belonged to one of the national railways of Continental Europe.
