British Railways Standard class '9F' no. 92143 hurries along the 'Up Fast' line with a load which includes 'vans' (i.e. southbound, with covered waggons'). Although the vans' are marshalled next to the engine, and these vehicles were fitted with vacuum brakes, the Headcode (i.e. the position of the oil-lamps' on the front of the engine) indicated this was a class 7 freight train. Therefore the vacuum brake was unavailable to the driver, as the vacuum hoses were not coupled-up to the engine (this had implications for the maximum permitted speed of the train). 92143 was 'shedded' at New England, Peterborough.
