The 'Scrap Line' on Retford (G.N.) shed. Engine No. 62019 was a member of the 'K1' class, a mixed-traffic design, not very old by this date. Withdrawn engines' were dumped on their home shed, sometimes for several months (hence the engine's aura of disuse) before leaving to be cut-up elsewhere. Following railway nationalization in 1948, Retford-based engines' were not specifically allocated to either the ex-Great Central or ex-Great Northern depots'. They were accomodated at one or other site, depending on circumstances. Exceptions to this arrangement were Retford's passeger-train engines'. These were mostly stabled on the G.N. shed. One Shed Master was in charge of both Retford Sheds' (usually, each engine depot had its own Shed Master).
