Mill Gate
East Bridgford
England
Stokes' Mill was one of two red-brick tower mills at East Bridgford, the other being Kneeton Hills Mill. The latter was situated well to the north of the village in an isolated position, whereas this one was located on the southern fringe of the built up area. It was built around 1828 with four double-shuttered patent sails on a six-storey tower, 58-feet in height. Around 1912 it ceased to operate and lost its sails following a lightning strike in 1928. The cap, machinery and external gallery were removed in 1940 but the shell of the tower survived and was later renovated to form part of a new dwelling. This view is looking east with cottages in Mill Gate visible to the rear.
