Sir Thomas Parkyn (1662-1741), Baronet, Scholar, Commissioner of the Peace and athlete (who also wrote a book on wrestling!), endowed the school in 1700. The slate stone with an inscription stands below the Parkyn Family arms, surmounted by an owl (to denote wisdom).
