Smarts Sidings and Steam Locomotive

Smarts
West Bridgford
England

The Midland Railway line between Nottingham and Melton. Passenger traffic on the line was supplemented by a considerable amount of freight. For many years the local railway stations enjoyed a transport monopoly. This was not restricted to passengers, the railway companies being happy to be a local goods carrier. When the line first opened, the stations were served by daily pickups in both directions, but by the turn of the century, the Down pickup had been dropped. The Up pickup would call at all the active points between Nottingham and Melton, and then run non stop back to Nottingham. It remained steam hauled until the 1960s. After the second world war, the role of the pickup was reduced by the increased use of lorries and Smarts siding (seen here) was disused after the war. The Ivatt 4MT 2-6-0 class locomotive was first introduced in 1947, and the two-coloured first carriage (known as 'blood & custard') dates from 1954 onwards.
