Horse buses began operating in London in 1829 and continued until 1914 in the capital and as late as 1932 in other parts of the country. Passengers identified their bus by colour and appearance so when buses altered routes it was usually necessary to repaint them and alter their appearance. In general there were no destination boards or an indication of the direction of travel, only a sign on the side stating the area served.
