Mr Francis, 'Bicycle Man', had a shop in Bingham Market Place. The penny farthing was developed between 1870 and 1878 and became a popular mode of transport till 1892 when the safety bicycle came into production. The penny farthing bicycle came in many sizes in order to fit small children and tall adults. The Coventry Machinists company of England advertised in their 1880 catalogue bicycles from 38 inches to 58 inches. At the height of the penny farthing boom there were over 500 companies producing these bicycles.
