Plumtree Station
Plumtree
England
A 'Black Five' 4-6-0 locomotive heads an Up (southbound) express passenger train (as indicated by the position of the headlamps on the front of the engine) through the by then closed station at Plumtree. This was the ex-Midland Railway route between Nottingham and Melton Mowbray, opened in 1879 to provide a more direct link between Nottingham and London St Pancras by avoiding Trent and Leicester. Most of the intermediate stations on the line served small villages and were not particularly well situated with the result that most closed to passengers relatively early. Plumtree was no exception and succumbed in 1949, just a year after the railways were nationalised and well before the era of Dr Beeching. The route itself was closed in 1968 but was retained from Melton Mowbray to Edwalton on the south side of Nottingham as a high speed test track.
