North End of Main Street, Epperstone, 1908

Main Street
Epperstone
England

This is at the top or north end of the Main Street and shows almost the last buildings in the village. The gate to the right gives on to the Rectory, now (2010) The Old Rectory; a rather unpleasant 1930s-ish replacement was built just out of shot. The location is opposite the back elevation of The Manor, in the 1950s taken over as Nottinghamshire's Constabulary HQ. Just over the crest of the slight hill and to the right will be Epperstone C of E Village School. The footpath to the school leaves the edge of the road and follows the higher ground to the right of the picture. It is a puzzle as to how the main road through the upper part of the village came to be set so much lower than the adjacent land over a significant length. Someone will know why. Information supplied by Richard J Brumpton.
