Station Road
Widmerpool
England

A double-headed freight train storming through the closed Widmerpool station on the former Midland Railway main line between Nottingham and Melton Mowbray. The train engine is a 'WD' Austerity 2-8-0 which is being piloted by ex-LMS Class 4F 0-6-0 44165. The weekday passenger service over this line commenced on Monday, February 2nd 1880 but Widmerpool was a remotely situated roadside station and lost its passenger service on Saturday, February 26th 1949. In the 1960s the main station building seen here was converted and extended to form a restaurant. The line itself closed as a through route in 1968, since when it has been used as a test track from Melton Mowbray, through Widmerpool as far as Edwalton. See also NCCS001622.
