England
Council schools were erected to serve Huthwaite in 1902. They were situated on the north side of New Street with the Infants section fronting the road and a separate Juniors section to its rear. This view shows the latter and is looking south-west; the houses just discernible in the right background are on Main Street, while the end of Newcastle Street is just off-picture to the left. Although generally known as New Street Schools, by 1960 they had been renamed after John Davis, an influential local magistrate and councillor. Both buildings closed in 1977 and the Juniors section seen here was later converted into business units. Pupils were relocated to a new John Davis School on Barker Street - the buildings this occupied had been constructed as a secondary modern school some 17 years earlier but had been rendered redundant by the implementation of comprehensive education by Nottinghamshire County Council. Picture the Past is grateful to website contributor 'Neil B' and the Huthwaite-online website for information on this picture, which was previously identified incorrectly as the village's National school.
