Bridge Street

The building located on the north east corner of the Toothill Lane/Bridge Street junction is best known locally as the 'Old Trustees Savings Bank'. The building was constructed in the early 18th century as a local copy of a town house style which originated in London during the late 17th century. It was probably built for a squirearchical family. Unfortunately, little is known about the history of this house. It may have been a girl's school at the beginning of the 19th century, but a town survey in 1877 recorded it as being a private house. In this century it has been a common lodging house, a cafe and recently a bank, hence the name.
