The chapel was founded in 1662 when ministers thrown out of their livings for failing to accept the Act of Uniformity sought refuge in Mansfield because the town was not then a corporate borough. At first they met in the old parsonage but later the chapel was built in 1702 and enlarged in 1870. The chapel was financed by local mill owner, William Hollins, former owner of Pleasley Vale Mills. The Old Meeting House is the oldest non-conformist place of worship in Nottinghamshire.
