Mansfield

The quarry was an important source of Mansfield rock from the 19th century, when quarrymen cut away the stone from the steep sided gorge of the river Maun. Stacks of cut stone were piled high to await distribution to builders. Mansfield stone was a pale sandstone and characterises many of the older buildings of the district. The works of Barringer, Wallis and Manners were later erected on the site, and it is now home to the factory of the Metal Box Company.
