Looking along a street in the village showing houses and a gas lamp in the foreground. The village of Edwinstowe is named after King Edwin of Northumbria, who was killed at the Battle of Hatfield in AD 633, just a mile and a half to the west of the village. His body was buried in a forest clearing and St. Mary's Church was later built around it. The King's body was later re-interred at Whitby Abbey. Edwinstowe is also famous as the setting for the marriage of Robin Hood and Maid Marian.
