As was traditional in the study of art, the Art School here shows plaster casts of Classical Roman and Greek sculptures and architectural detail. Students would use these to practice drawing in 'still life' and painting. Wax would be moulded to the original sculpture 'in situ', then plaster run into these moulds to make a life-size replica. There are wonderful examples of such 19th Century plaster casts in the Victoria and Albert Museum in one of the only collections of its type in the world, where it has full sized casts of such things as Trajan's Column and Michaelangelo's David.
