Showing here a page from a ledger which lists payments and names of recipients at Michaelmas. Note the name of 'Brunts' is here spelt at the top of the picture as 'Brunce'. Also of note is the amount of X's on the page. The recipient would place a X to sign for receiving the money. The Overseer would then fill in the name on either side of the cross. Compare the identical writing of the names Elis. Jackson and Elis. Whiteman at the bottom of the right hand column. The Charity was for the benefit of the congregation described in the will of Samuel Brunts as John Fletchers congregation, namely the building of schools (such as Brunts School built in 1891), residential homes for the elderly and almshouses. It became a housing association in 1978
