Showing the Town Hall, built in 1889, (still with it's turret) on the left of the picture, and the National Westminster Bank in the centre. The Denman's Head Hotel at the corner of Low street was built in c 1750, and was once called the King's Head. Its name was changed in 1820 because the landlord of the time greatly admired Lord Chief Justice Denman's defence of Queen Caroline at her trial.
