Members of Kirkby Colliery National Union of Mineworkers , together with former members, assembled under the colliery banner to celebrate the victory of their Coal Queen, Miss Maureen Brailsford, on her selection as Notts. area N.U.M. Coal Queen. Summit Colliery was at one time one of the largest in the country. Houses for the men were built around this time off Lowmoor Road. The Summit Colliery closed in 1969.
