Shown in this picture is the 6.45pm train from Nottingham Victoria. The engine is a member of the ex-LNER 'B1' class. Note that the signal beside the signal box has a wooden post which is square in section; coming 'from' Nottingham means that the signal will be the 'Down Home' (Down is a reference to northbound traffic; A Home signal is more-or-less 'the stop signal near the signal-box'. The signal arm is in the 'Off' position, allowing the train to pass.) In the bottom-right of the photograph, the circular feature between the tracks is a 'ground-disc' signal. This signal allows trains to be shunted into a siding beside the track. The sidings on the left of the photograph appear disused. However, as neither the ground disc has it's face obscured by a cross (which would mean it was not operational) nor are the points into the siding obviously clamped out of use, at least some of the tracks (known as 'roads' in this context) will be available to accept waggons. The signal on the post in the distance, between the sidings and the running lines, is the 'Up Starter'.
